Carlsbad Is Full of Active People. Here's What's Breaking Them Down.

Carlsbad is one of the most active communities in Southern California. The weather is perfect year-round, the trails are right there, the courts are packed, and the gym culture is strong. That's mostly a great thing. But it also means we see a lot of the same injuries coming through the door at Structure Chiropractic. Here's what's showing up most often — and what to do about it.

Pickleball

Pickleball Injuries

Pickleball has taken over Carlsbad and the injuries have followed. Tennis elbow is the big one — that outer elbow pain that flares up every time you grip the paddle. We also see a lot of shoulder strain from overhead smashes, knee pain from the quick lateral movements, and plantar fasciitis from players who aren't wearing the right footwear or aren't conditioning their feet for the demands of the sport. The common thread is that most pickleball players are extremely active on the court and do very little off it. Strength training, mobility work, and proper recovery would prevent the majority of what we see.

Golf Injuries

Carlsbad has some of the best golf in San Diego County and the golfers here play a lot. The most common issues are golfer's elbow, lower back pain from repetitive rotation, and shoulder problems from a swing that's putting stress on joints that aren't prepared for it. Golf looks low impact but it's highly repetitive and the forces involved in a full swing are significant. A proper warm up, some rotator cuff work, and attention to hip mobility go a long way.

Running and Trail Injuries

The coastal trails here are beautiful and they get used hard. IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and knee pain are all common among Carlsbad runners. Most of these come down to the same thing — too much volume, not enough strength work. Runners tend to just run. Adding some single leg strength exercises and addressing any hip or ankle weakness usually makes a big difference.

Hyrox and Deka Training Injuries

Functional fitness competitions like Hyrox and Deka are exploding in popularity here, and for good reason — they're challenging, community-driven, and genuinely test what your body can do. But training for them puts serious demands on your shoulders, knees, lower back, and hips. Sled pushes and pulls, ski-erg, burpee broad jumps — done with poor mechanics or on a body that isn't recovered, these movements cause problems. At Structure we have Hyrox and Deka specific equipment on site including a ski-erg and sled, and Dr. Valdez competes in these events himself. If you're training for an event or just incorporating these movements into your workouts, having someone assess your mechanics early is worth it.

Desk and Posture Related Issues

Not everyone who comes in is a hardcore athlete. We also see a lot of neck tension, upper back tightness, and headaches from people who sit at a desk all day. Carlsbad has a significant remote working population and the combination of long hours, poor ergonomics, and not enough movement creates real problems over time. This one is almost entirely preventable with some simple adjustments to your setup and a few movement breaks throughout the day.

One Thing Worth Knowing Before You Book

Structure works differently than most chiropractic clinics. Sessions are at least an hour and the work we do together is only part of the equation. You'll leave with exercises, movement cues, or adjustments to your daily habits — and doing that work between visits really drives the results.

This isn't a "lie on the table and get fixed" model. It's a collaborative one. Patients who get the most out of their time here are the ones who show up ready to be active participants in their own recovery. If that sounds like you, we'll get along just fine.

What To Do About Any of These

Don't wait. Most of the patients who come into Structure have been dealing with something for weeks or months before they finally book. By the time they get here the problem is usually more layered than it needed to be. An early assessment, some hands-on work, and a set of exercises to address the root cause is almost always faster and cheaper than waiting until it becomes a bigger issue.
